I have hit the record button. Welcome in. host, Patrick Cadigan. You're going to join me as I revisit digging just a little bit into the lore that gave this series watching its first run or discovering the show for the forward and back into a world of heroes, villains and gloriously am recording this discussion, because the first time, again, this is the first episode I intend to follow the same show. When you know the name, who it was written by air date, breakdown. We're going to go through each one of the beats things like that. When it's available, I'll have trivia and as much around this animated series as some of the other ones However, I have to say that one of the reasons that I was the 1980s I came into it, obviously because of Flash Sam J Jones, and then consequently, also the Filmation Flash Gordon, I was like, oh yeah, this is super cool. I character, because, of course, the long history that exists They were completely new to me. And even in the build up to the Mandrake was one of the more elusive characters for me. So way more about the Phantom and Flash Gordon that are out there getting to know them more and more as time goes on. So boom. has an air date, September 8, 1986 which I figured out was on doing that for all 65 episodes. So of course, this was in episode was written by Team Dick Robbins and Bryce Malik. As it picked up. So some of the information that he and others now, he was a writer and a story editor, in some cases, as for Hollywood in 1979 and Godzilla, the old 1970s cartoon animated 80s, he did the little rascals, he did transformers. And then, was a story editor, also for James Bond Jr, which I've. I've introduced to a whole slew of characters, pretty much right also meet this next generation, or effectively the children of We have DDA, the Phantoms daughter, and we have Cashin, Ming the merciless. We have Prince CRO 10, who is introduced that we meet. We're actually introduced to Dale Arden. hear her name. She is referred to as flash his wife and Rick's is unusual, again, for 80s animated television. But in this called dynac X. However, I'm jumping ahead of myself here, introduced to Kisa, who is dda's Panther. And then we get zuffie, All right, so moving on to the story breakdown. We have got Act super excited about zuffie. Mandrake and Lothar. Now he reveals that planet Mongo is flash, but Mandrake uses his signature hypnosis to trick them the failure of his robots and prepares to use flash's wife, Act Two, Rick manages to escape his cell, but Dale stays behind Mandrake Lothar, they repair the ship that the ice robots had Inquisitor, a device designed to drain her information and life palace too late, Dale's life force has been depleted, leaving crystal represents just yet. Act Three, Ming abandons the ruined Mongo and establishes a team travels to deep woods to recruit the legendary Phantom. integrated into Earth life. Flash enrolls Rick LJ and Jada kidnap Rick and LJ during the first day of school. Act Four, LJ and Rick are taken to an abandoned State Jetta uses her telepathic link with her Panther Kisa to help Phantom calls on the power of 10 tigers to gain entrance to the LJ manage to break out of their cell and sabotage the machinery their ship, Rick presents the crystal given to him by Zuffy introduces the idea of using the crystal in a new supercomputer All right, so, like I mentioned before, in this particular typically see this in 80s cartoons, 80s animation, you usually pretty low. You know, even in GI Joe and transformers shooting each other and things like that, but nobody ever that then they took basically her essence, and then they AI, granted, I know that they've been talking about this for cool. So we have that core theme of this episode is the Phantom, Lothar. These guys go back to easily, to the 1930s I but then, like Buck Rogers, I was a big buck rogers kid played I haven't seen that all the way through. And then I just all the way through those cereals, for me, are kind of hit were definitely of their time, so to speak. Just, you know, bad special effects or anything like that. But yeah, they it wasn't, So, but anyway, so this is, again, the modernization of serials were Captain Marvel. The Adventures of Captain Marvel. it's taken sci fi for Flash Gordon, the mysticism of me. into this high tech 1980 setting, they are flying off in pretty terrible, and the Superman serials were very cool. helicopters. And, you know, they're, they're fighting with again, we have these legacy characters owned by King's sensors, that was not allowed. So again, one of the reasons why old icons, you know, if you will. So one of the other can't remember who it was that brought it up. It could have mystical power. So you've got this dynamic that starts up on the kids was one to obviously have that demographic, because these earthly powers such as, you know, like mandrakes this conflict for all of these different characters. So just then that was a trope at the time. They always had to include All right. So given that this is the first episode, why don't we going to start with Flash Gordon. He is protagonist, the tacit recognition that flash, Mandrake, Phantom and Lothar properties within the king's King's Feature Syndicate line. Ming the merciless, of course, and that's going to set up their translate over for the kids of today. So they were like, well, he is a natural leader. He starts out as we are introduced coming. So of course, then we have Rick Gordon. This is flash will say that outside of the 80s trope to bring in kids in inventor, and he is eager to help his father, and he wants to and an inventive and an inventor. So, yeah, he's going introduced to when I think of the kids from, like the mask mandrakes powers, like if they're going to need something introduced to the Phantom, who, in this iteration, is kit strength, superhuman strength. Now, if I remember correctly, most was penny from Inspector Gadget. I just it was really, the sense that he was just a regular guy and he had all of his claim to fame was essentially like he was a normal great trope. Oh, and then, of course, Wendy and Marvin in the bit, so they give him a fairly nondescript power about pulling to give him various additional powers, superhuman powers later minded the Wonder Twins quite as much, but they were still kind Phantom was just a normal guy. We have Mandrake the magician. He is a powerful magician and a but the magical powers that he produces, they are real. The various magical abilities, and again, those will kind of mix historically was mandrake's Personal body. Art, and so he is and a very formidable fighter. They he is introduced with Walker, who is the Phantoms daughter. The plan is for her to Her skills are again combat skills, although we learn later tiger. Then we meet LJ In other words, Lothar Jr. He is lothars skills, he revolves around superhuman strength and super He is mandrakes adopted orphan. He is under mandrakes care. They So again, his skills, his powers, magician. And I would not terrible, but there's some funny moments with him in the they kind of utilize him. Sometimes he's he's definitely On the villain side, we have Ming the merciless. So he is the to conquer Earth. His skills are essentially being a strategic As we are introduced to him, of course, he's plotting to invade others are the ice robots. Now, these are the min... the minions earth. You know, I mean, it's basic robot kind of stuff, cold that. Like, there's nothing really memorable about these other characters that we meet is the main ice robot, which is see pop up in this series. And we are introduced to him here. But then, of course, again, when the plot needs him to well, you some of the episode trivia that I found. Now, again, this was earth. In this particular episode, again, one of the first and name themselves the defenders of the Earth, the only And again, the main reason that all these characters were pulled rights of the king's future syndicate intellectual property. and we know that Stan Lee had a hand in writing the opening song Lee, during the commentary for this episode, let me pull up the they mentioned. I am going to leave a link in the show notes about, this again, was one of the more unusual cartoons at the were in the room at the same time. Historically, for those bring it all together, cut it, slice it all together, and then that I did not know about this particular episode, and then the the animation for that. And for those of you know, the So, but it was just the first two episodes that Toei did for track, they they were not a fan of zuffy, the space alien, challenge within the team to come up with this alien. And so resources to get it right, and then it took even more resources time. So again, not a super, not a super big fan of Zoe the space the show was being developed, the Phantom was going to be the then in the pre-production, like building towards the series, One of the other things that I thought was kind of interesting correctly, they had done some mock ups and some drawings, and switch it to green, because then that looked better. Interesting think, yeah. Loren Lester, see, I'm better at this than I think definitely tell you that that is not a name that I have right background on the actors who do the voice acting. But for right voice actor, and they actually met towards the end of the kind of cool, vintage 80s for animation a child several child content for the children, because, of course, they didn't they they weren't 100% sure how much of the notes that they used actually, like, took in and considered when they were doing One other last thing that I thought was really interesting were talking about it, likened it very much to a radio show, so notes that I took for the commentary, because there's a so I then am going to bring this discussion to a close. You will. because this is the first discussion. I'm still kind of podcast that I do called the Post-Secondary Transition like I'm walking into a classroom and I'm telling people all these different places, because there is, I said in the there, there's lots of information, especially when you that. There, there is a lot of stuff out there. So there's I have a pretty good format going, I think, but I am always it's nice, I'll actually read it out. But anyway, I'm going to go you soon.
